Cheerleading
Tryouts
Paola Cheerleading Tryouts are held in May. All tryout participants attend a cheer clinic (three days prior to tryouts) and learn one cheer, one chant, and jumps. Participants try out, in front of three to four non-biased judges, in groups of three. Paola Middle School has three separate cheer squads: Football Squad, Boys Basketball Squad, and Girls Basketball Squad. Participants may try out for one squad, two squads, or all three squads (prioritizing the order of their selection). Squads consist of twelve members each, totaling thirty-six cheerleaders for the year.
Summer Camp
Summer Camp is held in August. The cheerleaders learn EVERY cheer, chant, and dance that will be performed that school year. During camp, pep-assemblies, home game nights, and travel squads are also organized.
During home games, all twelve cheer squad members participate. The squad looks forward to home games because the cheers and stunts are performed together.
Travel Squads
For away games, each season’s squad is divided into two groups of six consisting of three seventh grade cheerleaders and three eighth grade cheerleaders. Travel Squad A travels to the first away game, and Travel Squad B travels to the second away game, and so on.
Pep Assemblies
Cheerleaders live for the pep assemblies! They work almost all season to perfect the assembly. They perform a dance, great stunts, and great cheers and chants. They love the class spirit yells. Another critical aspect of the assembly is the school group participation. The choir, band, dance team and others work with the cheerleaders to create a great assembly.
