Who can be in Band?

Anyone who is willing to put forth a little dedication and hard work is welcome in the Paola Middle School Band, even if you’ve never played an instrument before! If you don’t think you can afford to play in band, just come see the band director and we can work something out. The only real requirement to be successful in band is the desire to succeed!

Bring instrument, pencil, music, and any instrument supplies (reeds, valve oil, etc.) to class every day.

Practice your music. We can get more accomplished during rehearsal if everyone knows how to play their own part. We will be able to practice on the musicality of the music instead of just the notes and rhythms. You will be required to practice between 30-60 minutes per week.

Attend all concerts! This is not an option. We depend on each and every member of the band. Missing people at a concert can be devastating to the group as a whole! This is where band is a lot like a team sports. A baseball team would have a very difficult time playing the game if they didn’t have any pitchers! We need everyone at all concerts!!! A new band shirt is purchased each year, the price varies. The shirts are worn at all band concerts.

BAND GRADES

  • Students receive daily participation points each day they are in class. These points can be lost if the student forgets their instrument, music, etc. They can also be lost for talking or non-participation during class.
  • Practice Slips - Students are required to turn in practice slips once a week. Practice slips are worth one point per minute practiced (i.e., 30 minutes = 30 points).
  • Students will be taking several playing tests each quarter. These are necessary in order for me to evaluate students’ progress throughout the year.
  • Concerts - Students are required at all concerts throughout the year. If a concert is missed, the student’s grade will be dropped by one letter grade. If there is an emergency (child is sick, funeral, etc.) the student will be able to make up that letter grade by writing a report. See Mr. Proctor for additional details.
  • Extra Credit - Extra credit is available throughout the year. Students may turn in practice minutes at any time. I will give five extra credit points to students for every 15 minutes they practice. Parents must sign a sheet of paper stating how many minutes/hours their child practiced.
